I have come to understand that everything that is, is related to everything else that is - and that it is all one thing. How and in what order I show you my photographs makes time and place irrelevant. I began as a painter studying with various artists at the Art Students League in New York and at the Artist's Workshop in Los Angeles. I continued my art education in museums and galleries in the U.S and in western Europe where I worked in the late 1940's. My goal through all my work is to convey my feelings about the human condition, the spirit of man, woman, and child, to investigate life.
This photograph of workers digging out the rubble of Berlin in 1949 was made with a 35 mm. reflex Exacta, I bought at the Army PX there. It represents my transition from painter to photographer. The immediacy of film and camera captivated me. Ever since photography has been my passion. It is the lens through which I tell my stories.
More than sixty years have gone by between Berlin and today, when I made this composite. The trees are in the forest above Basin, Montana,. The Buddhist nuns are in a ceremony at the Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush, New York. The photograph was made on my computer in my Greenwhich Village studio. I have gone from film to digital, from my darkroom to my computer. But no matter the medium or technology my goal still remains the same. To investigate lives and to continue my search for truth.
